About this event

Join us in Nazaré from October 1st to 4th to deepen your knowledge on optimizing aquaculture production through RAS!The RAS course will take place from October 1 to 4, in person in Nazaré, Portugal.

The RAS course aims to enhance participants’ understanding and skills in operating and managing recirculating aquaculture systems. With a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, the course will cover key aspects of RAS, including water quality management, fish welfare, and system dimensioning. The training will be conducted over 3.5 days, culminating in a site visit to a local RAS unit, with an optional extra field visit.

The course is designed for professionals in the field of aquaculture and related sciences, offering a comprehensive overview of RAS operation, design, and sustainability.

Day1

Course Introduction: Meet the lecturers and participants and learn about the course objectives.

Aquaculture Overview: Gain insights into fish consumption, the role of aquaculture, and EU policies.

Introduction to RAS: Understand the general principles and importance of RAS.

Water Quality Management: Learn about the limits, interactions, and risks associated with water quality.

Fish Welfare: Explore biological aspects and species diversification in RAS.

Water Treatment: Discover methods for removing particles and CO2 from the water.

Day 2:

Advanced Water Treatment: Techniques for removing metabolites, nitrate, and phosphorus.

RAS Operation: Biosecurity, disease management, and feeding strategies in RAS.

Monitoring and Automation: Explore the possibilities of AI and ML in RAS monitoring.

Day 3:

RAS Design: Learn how to dimension a RAS facility, focusing on water consumption, oxygen, CO2, and biofilters.

Practical Exercises: Apply your knowledge by designing your own RAS facility.

Sustainability Practices: Discuss environmental management, sludge management, and circular economy in aquaponics.

Day 4:

Production Planning: Develop a production plan using Excel and biological principles.

Practical Application: Prepare and refine your production plan.

Site Visit: Tour a RAS unit at Ampliqua to see real-world applications.
