About this event

*The Comedy of Errors* is Shakespeare’s most straightforwardly slapstick comedy, though signs of his later maturity are also present.

At this stage of his career, Shakespeare was still trying to follow, at least to some extent, the standard patterns of play-writing: the play is based pretty closely on Plautus, and it fits both the five-act structure and the rules about the “unities” as well as anything he wrote. But there are innovations as well.

The characters’ confusions are humorous because they’re based on the kinds of delusion that regular people suffer all the time; these involve questions of fidelity, social standing, being cheated, and so on. The characters misinterpret situations in ways that bring out their latent fears; and in their hysteria, they cause these fears to be realized.

What does this play say about marriage? twins? identity? How does it relate to Shakespeare’s future plays? What is the dominate mode of this play?
