About this event

This luxuriant play is steeped in rich imagery and a rich, decadent eroticism, but it retains parallels to the ambiguous conflicts of the other Roman plays.

It has a vast number of scenes and characters, and it sprawls over a broad geographical canvas.

The idea of a ruler being destroyed by sexual desire was a commonplace in Shakespeare’s time, and Shakespeare overlays a Venus-and-Mars theme, wherein Mars is destroyed by Venus. But it’s more of a tragedy than a morality play or a romantic extravaganza.

How does Antony compare to his younger self in Julius Caesar? What’s Cleopatra’s angle with Antony? What’s Octavius like? What’s Octavia’s function?
